چکیده

Drought is one of the most destructive natural disasters causing serious damages to human society, and studies have projected more severe and widespread droughts in the coming decades associated with the warming climate. Although several drought indices have been developed for drought monitoring, most of them were based on large scale environmental conditions rather than ecosystem transitional patterns to drought. Here, we propose using the ecosystem function oriented Normalized Ecosystem Drought Index (NEDI) to quantify drought severity, loosely related to Sprengel’s and Liebig’s Law of the Minimum for plant nutrition. Extensive eddy covariance measurements from 60 AmeriFlux sites across 8 IGBP vegetation types were used to validate the use of NEDI. The results show that NEDI can reasonably capture ecosystem transitional responses to limited water availability, suggesting that drought conditions detected by NEDI are ecosystem function oriented. The widely used Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), on the other hand, does not have a clear relationship with ecosystem responses to drought conditions because ecosystem adaptation ability is not considered in PDSI calculation. 1 This report is a chapter of Kuang-Yu Chang's doctoral dissertation. 2 Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of California, Davis, California, USA. 3 Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Declaring Drought for Effective Water Management

Water managers are tasked with resolving conflicts between freshwater resource uses, which range from municipal water supply, to recreation, and to sustaining aquatic ecosystem integrity. Further complicating management, hydrologic processes experience numerous sources of periodic, quasi-periodic, and episodic variation. Water allocation trade offs are often most complex and contentious when av...

Ecosystem Drought Response Timescales from Thermal Emission versus Shortwave Remote Sensing

Remote sensing is used for monitoring the impacts of meteorological drought on ecosystems, but few large-scale comparisons of the response timescale to drought of different vegetation remote sensing products are available. We correlated vegetation health products derived from polar-orbiting radiometer observations with a meteorological drought indicator available at different aggregation timesc...

Evaluation of rangeland gross primary productivity sensitivity potential to drought using ecosystem modelling

Gross primary productivity is one of the most important factors in the carbon cycle of terrestrial ecosystems. With global warming increase, the frequent drought events and the specific response of regional vegetation to these changes, it is essential to identify and quantify the relationships between climatic and GPP data in arid region. In this study, the responses of gross primary productivi...

Evaluation of Drought Implications on Ecosystem Services: Freshwater Provisioning and Food Provisioning in the Upper Mississippi River Basin

Drought is one of the most widespread extreme climate events with a potential to alter freshwater availability and related ecosystem services. Given the interconnectedness between freshwater availability and many ecosystem services, including food provisioning, it is important to evaluate the drought implications on freshwater provisioning and food provisioning services. Studies about drought i...

Evaluating evapotranspiration and water-use efficiency of terrestrial ecosystems in the conterminous United States using MODIS and AmeriFlux data

a r t i c l e i n f o In this study, we used the remotely-sensed data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), meteorological and eddy flux data and an artificial neural networks (ANNs) technique to develop a daily evapotranspiration (ET) product for the period of 2004–2005 for the conterminous U.S. We then estimated and analyzed the regional water-use efficiency (WUE) based o...
